Today’s 100 word topic: Squash

When I was younger I liked vegetables, I wouldn’t say I loved them, but I never had to be nagged at dinner time. My brother tended to gag on the vegetables he could not stomach and my father would glare and make remarks about how ridiculous my brother was acting. In my nine year old mind I equated being able to eat squash, zucchini, and radishes as a form of maturity. Clearly being more sophisticated than most children I was ready to handle whatever the world threw at me. I’m still not sure if I was right or wrong.

In my house, it wasn’t ever okay to not eat what was on your plate. Usually, “trying” the food wasn’t enough either — dinner was for eating and it wasn’t up for discussion.

Strangely enough, this didn’t turn me new-food-phobic, but there are still some foods that I absolutely can’t stand. And right at the top of that list is acorn squash. Not all squash bothers me, but, boy, do I hate acorn squash.

Which is kind of weird because my father always cooked it so it was dripping in butter, cinnamon, and sugar. Hardly a bad flavor combination. But somehow the mixture of those flavors and the stringy squash texture was just unbearable to my palate.

Luckily, I married someone who abhors acorn squash as much as me. Ah! True Love!!

Oops. That should be “as much as I.” Stupid grammar.
